When to start lymphatic drainage after surgery

A recovery guide from the Belleza Reyna team · 5 min read

Surgery starts your transformation, but recovery decides the outcome. Post-operative lymphatic drainage is one of the simplest ways to protect your results.

What is post-operative lymphatic drainage?

Post-operative lymphatic drainage massage is a gentle, specialized technique that helps your body remove excess fluid, reduce swelling, and support healing after surgery. It stimulates the lymphatic system so trapped fluid can move through the body and be naturally eliminated, which may reduce inflammation, bruising, and discomfort.

How it helps your recovery

After surgery, your body often holds on to fluid because of inflammation and a temporary disruption of the lymphatic system. Regular lymphatic drainage can help:

  • Reduce post-surgical swelling
  • Encourage fluid movement and drainage
  • Improve circulation and support tissue healing
  • Reduce discomfort and pressure
  • Lower the risk of fluid buildup (seromas) and fibrosis

When should you start?

Many patients begin within the first week after surgery, once their surgeon gives approval. Starting early can help control swelling and prevent fluid from building up, but the exact timing always depends on your procedure and your physician's recommendations.

If you know your surgery date, book your sessions ahead of time. That way we can plan a safe recovery schedule with you before your procedure.

How many sessions will you need?

It depends on the type of surgery and how your body heals. Many patients benefit from a series of sessions during the first few weeks of recovery, then move to weekly sessions. Others continue ongoing care to manage swelling and support long-term results.

Which surgeries benefit?

Lymphatic drainage supports recovery after cosmetic and medical procedures alike, including:

  • Liposuction, BBL, tummy tuck, and body contouring
  • Breast augmentation, reduction, or reconstruction
  • Knee, shoulder, ACL, and hip replacement surgery
  • Back or spinal surgery
  • Bariatric, gastric bypass, and abdominal surgery

Is it safe?

Yes, when it's performed by a practitioner trained in post-operative care. The technique uses very light, controlled movements that avoid pressure on healing tissue while still encouraging lymphatic flow.

Traveling for surgery?

Many of our clients travel to Austin and Central Texas for their procedures. Our Post-Op Resort Stay at Kalahari Resorts includes recovery care, meals, a daily recovery massage, and transportation from your surgery center, so you can focus on healing.
